Universal Spirit Yoga announces the start of a new, Yoga for Cancer Care Class. Classes will be held Thursdays, 11:00am – 12pm, beginning January 5, 2017 at USY, 408 W. 5th Ave, Naperville.
This class is designed to work with individuals who have been newly diagnosed with cancer, are in active cancer treatment or are cancer survivors and looking to start a gentle yoga routine. Caregivers are also encouraged and welcome to join.
Starting or maintaining a yoga practice after a cancer diagnosis results in individuals who are stronger both mentally and physically. Research shows that benefits of yoga include:
– improved overall quality of life
– improved strength, flexibility and balance
– increased range of motion
– strengthened immune system support
– reduced treatment-induced fatigue
– reduced anxiety
– improved mood, confidence and sense of well-being
Karen Jansen, a certified and registered yoga teacher, will teach gentle mat-based yoga postures, restorative poses, breath work and meditation to create harmony within the mind and body. All movements and poses can be modified to suit individual needs and limitations (i.e. lymphedema, neuropathy) however, this class requires students ability to get up and down from the floor.
Mats, blocks, straps, blankets and bolsters are all provided, but please feel free to bring your own mat. Pure grade essential oils may be included in class to enhance the experience. Each oil has unique properties that will aid in grounding and relaxing the student physically and emotionally.
Requirements: A confidential health history form and medical release form will be required. Please arrive 20 minutes early to your first class to fill out the necessary paperwork.
KAREN JANSEN is a RYT-200 and has completed a 50hr Cancer Care Yoga training. Her goal is to make Yoga safe, effective and accessible for cancer care and to empower students to move and feel better in their bodies, improving physical mobility, breath awareness and ability.
